International Wrestling Australia - "wrestling is real ... its the rest of the world that is fake"
International Wrestling Australia is injecting more fun, more attitude and more excitement than has ever been seen in Australia's 100 year old pro-wrestling circuit. The family based component of the IWA is all part of the troupe's spectacular brand of sports entertainment. Kids, dad's mum's even granny and grandpaw can be seen in the crowd as 300 pound plus masses of men grind, slam and basically beat the crap out of each other all in the name of a good time.
Above and beyond the standard live sporting event, IWA's live shows are action packed and exceedingly entertaining. The whole performance is audience interactive and so provides something extra for those who want a little more when they go and see a live show. The characters are also a great credit to IWA's success. They are well-defined and easy to follow, making it enjoyable for audience members to pick and choose favourites. Good oi'Aussie biffo, larger than life characters and comical storylines that are relevant to Australian audiences.
The men and women who create the performance team of International Wrestling Australia are entertainers but their strength and durability is far beyond that of your average actor. At 250 pounds plus, these men take up to half hour of being jumped on, thrown down, pushed over and kicked and still have the strength to pick each other up. "When you come to one of our shows our guys will break their backs for you," says promoter Ty Townsend. Wrestler Phil Picasso adds, 1t's a lot tougher than playing a game of football."
This might be but unlike football, pro-wrestling is technically not a sport because the matches are predetermined and rely heavily on dramatic performance. It is this that leads to the vicious and completely false rumours that pro-wrestling is fake. Of course this isn't true. Why? Firstly because pro- wrestling is never promoted as being a sport but rather as sports entertainment and secondly because pro-wrestlers do wrestle (professionally no less) and they are subject to injury. Perhaps the biggest difference between pro-wrestling and 'real'sport is that pro-wrestling openly admits to glorifying characters and embellishing storylines.
