MATT DEWAR

A charasmatic young performer from the Northern Beaches of Australia. Matt Dewar blends the eloquent and stimulating sounds of an acoustic guitar, with the smooth and soulful sound of the voice.

Sydney, NSW, Australia
Hello, my name is Matthew Dewar. At the age of 5, I picked up the acoustic guitar and was taught my first song. Year by year passed as other songs and techniques were added and modified. Soon, I was 8 and received my first electric guitar. I joined the school band as the primary guitarist learning hits such as "All the small things" and "Paint it black". I moved on from the school band to my own band, and began life as a novice writer.

The purchasing of a Maton acoustic only encouraged the thrill of writing years later, and by 15 I had already toured Tasmania with the junior stage band, and started my own rock band. Throughout high school I drifted in and out of several different projects including a blues rock band, an acoustic due, a trio and school bands. But my sole love was performing as a solo artist. I graduated high school with a music score of 94.

After school I participated in as many musical collaborations as I could. Some of these were a stand in front of house engineer for the "Swinging Sixties", Performing at the Mothers Day Classic and various other performances. Eventually I turned my nose to the Australian Institute of Music in Surrey Hill. I attended AIM full time for 2 semesters. Over this time, I consolidated anything and everything I was being exposed to (Other musicians, theory, practical experience etc) and really determined my future as a solo artist. I begun a regular gig as an acoustic duo with a mate at a small cafe. Over this period (and being it a completely acoustic environment with no amplification) I was able to substantially improve both my skill as a guitarist and as a singer. As a part of assessments and external gigs, I played with several different groups. Which was incredibly constructive. An example of this would be having to choose 2 well known songs, put a band together, learn the song, and perform it in front of the class.

I've recorded in the basement studios at AIM which house some of the best equipment in the country, and I’ve performed at the Easter Show numerous times. My ambition still stands at being a successful Singer/Songwriter, but I also possess an undeniable passion for playing covers at any kind of venue. Some of these covers are:
