Psycho Zydeco, or the psychos as their fans affectionately dub them, specialise in the high-energy, uplifting style of music known as zydeco. This music was originally born in the swamplands and bayou area of Louisiana's deep south.
Studying and performing this style of music for over 13 years now the band has created their own distinctive style. Driving washboard and funky, powerful drums underpin skittering, bluesy accordion melodies that weave together music designed for dancing.
Psycho Zydeco's fast paced blend of bluesy grooves, metal percussion and general craziness propels people out of their seats and on to the dance floor. Flying stainless steel washboard, industrial sized cajun triangle, wailing sax and guitar team up with the pumping squeezebox to create a compelling onstage spectacle. The heady mix of traditional cajun, modern zydeco, blues and funk conjures an atmosphere of being in the midst of an open air music festival.
With Performances at every major music festival nationwide, TV and radio appearances and three tours of the U.K and Europe, Sydney based Psycho Zydeco are one of the most successful touring "blues/roots" acts in Australia.
Their first three recordings, Swamp Box and Sell Your Soul, and Zydeco Factory were favourably received by fans and critics alike. The band has just released their fourth album "Get On board" and are busy once again with promotional and touring duties.
On Get on Board we’ve recorded a bunch of original tunes as well as select arrangements of material that helps us tell the story of zydeco music. The new Psycho material shows the different sides that the band has developed over time. While songs like Zydeco Nights have an upbeat and happy Cajun groove, others such as the rollicking Surf Cowboy are a little wild and downright fun! Psycho Zydeco is proud of this new record and is anxiously waiting to see how their fans take to the new tunes.
If you haven’t seen the band live, this recording is pretty indicative of a Psycho Zydeco gig, capturing the band in full flight. The love of playing the music shines through when the zydeco machine gets up a full head of steam.
