“The Alluvials”
Biography
The Alluvials are David and Tania Harvey
Tania & David Harvey have played together before the Alluvials in a four person line up called the Rutherford Ramblers in Maitland NSW for three years and played bush songs and popular tunes for community hall audiences. This band operated between 1993 and 1996. The Rutherford Ramblers line up was Bob Fleming (Drums and Lagerphone), Rob Adams (Button Accordion), David Harvey (Guitar and lead vocals) and Tania Harvey (Mandolin, Banjo and lead vocals). The High-light of their performances was the “Christmas in July” Gig at Seaham (near Newcastle NSW) on the Atlanta Olympic Games opening ceremony night. The band pulled the local community away from their TV sets to entertain them with traditional colonial music on a memorable night.
David likes to listen to Rock and Roll, country, some Jazz, Blues, Irish and some pop but dislikes rap (because it is too negative to be called music). David is influenced by Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Elton and John Williamson. David’s first instrument was the piano. David studied the Piano at age eight because his fingers were too small for the guitar. He achieved second grade at the Sydney Australian Music Examinations Board at age eleven and achieved second place at the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod (much to his teacher’s surprise I might add). At age fourteen David took up guitar seriously studying under a Spanish Guitar Tutor Jose Tavares (Joe Travers). David now plays the acoustic guitar and sings. David has also played with a Bathurst Rock and Roll Band called “Salt Water Creek”, line up being Damien Beck (Drums), Chris Bayliss (Guitar and Vocals).
Tania learnt the keyboards from a music lecturer called Eileen Mahon who was also her first Choir Mistress. Jerry Atwell was Tania’s 5th grade teacher and inspired her whole approach to music and education. Tania took up the guitar in her tertiary studies at Waverley (Sydney Teacher’s College) as a portable instrument that she could use to help her educate young children. Tania has also sung in a folk group while she was growing up in Bathurst NSW. Tania likes to listen to Jazz, Bush, Folk, Classical and good quality Rock and Roll such as Blue Suede shoes. Her influences are Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong and J.S. Bach.
Both Tania and David have experience performing with large choirs. David and Tania’s musical mentor amongst others is Doug Rowe (ex Flying Circus). Currently David and Tania play traditional colonial “Bush” Music at the Bathurst Gold Fields to Children aged between ten and upwards. The act varies between traditional to modern songs with plenty of dancing and audience participation.
