THE DECIBELS

THE DECIBELS

From jazz to swing, latin to popular music, these players delight in beautiful sounds that can sit quietly in the background or stand out on center stage.

Melbourne, VIC, Australia
To enchant a crowd with music, there is a certain magical formula. Firstly a group of musicians with the skill and technique to play across styles and eras. These musicians need to have finesse and charisma oozing from every tappin' toe and noddin' head; breathing life into a bossa or playing all the world's sadness in every ballad. Finally, to delight audience and management alike these players must have a warm smile that welcomes each stranger and a professional attitude in presentation and performance.

The Decibels are all this and more. From jazz to swing, latin to popular music, these players delight in beautiful sounds that can sit quietly in the background or stand out on center stage. These musical cats have many hidden talents, as the drummer switches to piano for a tune, the guitarist picks up his clarinet, or the bass player adds some sweet harmonies. Miss Kimba on vocals has a sultry performance style that is mesmerising and her rich tone has been likened to Anita O'Day and Chris Connor.

Available now for engagements locally and internationally, The Decibels will add something special to any venue or engagement. Whether it's formal jazz or a late night funk feel you are after, let us entertain you.

Kim Scorpecci - Vocals
A diva of swing and sass...An empress of song and cabaret...Kimba Scorpecci graduated from the VIctorian College of the Arts in 2002 with a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in theatre. Since that time she has been busy performing jazz, cabaret, theatre. all with her trademark wit and banter.
As well as performing up to 6 nights a week at Melbourne's finest jazz and soul venues, Kimba has performed in a number of theatre shows, including her own one woman show 'Journeys of a Gender Nomad'. She has recently premiered her cabaret show based on the life of Billie Holiday entitled 'Billie and Me' to much acclaim. Kimba has performed at The Famous Speigeltent and directed her own show at the 1999 Melbourne International Festival.

Kimba's rich tone suits jazz ballads beautifully, but is versatile enough for her to sing R&B, soul and popular music. She is a quintessential performer with a special talent to draw an audience into the emotion of a ballad, or get them giggling and shakin' on the dance floor. Having led and managed numerous bands over the past 5 years, her professionalism, organisation and communication are second to none

Ryan Griffith - Guitar
Ryan Griffith is a guitarist, composer, sound artist and music educator. Since graduating from The Victorian College of the Arts in 2001, Ryan has been one of the busiest young guitarists in town, playing be bop, big band swing, funk, blues and improvised music to the masses. Memorable performances include the 2002 Speigeltent at the Melbourne International Festival, and playing in the supporting acts for bands such as Silverchair and You am I.

He has composed a number of works for theatre and film, as well as events such as the 2000 Olympic Games. Ryan's compositions have been released throughout the UK, Australia and America on labels such as Grow Your Own Records. Ryan will be performing in June 2004 with Melbourne's acclaimed Playbox Theatre company, as part of NAIDOC week. (Indigenous Festival) In 2003 Ryan was selected as an artist in Residence at the Melbourne Aquarium.

Ryan is also an accomplished clarinet player and has recently begun singing a few jazz and country tunes, which have been very well received by audiences.

Chris Schurmann - Bass
Chris has been playing and performing double and electric bass for over six years. In 2001 he completed an Advanced Diploma in music performance, and has currently deferred study from ‘The Victorian College Of The Arts’ to meet a busy performance schedule.

Chris is a versatile player who plays with skill and solid time across all styles. He is also able to swap between double, electric bass and electric guitar with ease. With a large repertoire of tunes behind him and his ability to provide backing vocals, Chris is proving to be a real asset to the Decibel crew.

Chris has performed with a large number of Melbourne Jazz musicians such as Adam Simmons, Steve Sedergreen, Andy Sugg, Harry Angus (Cat Empire), Paul Williamson, and Jamie Ohlers to name just a few.

Justin Marshal

His work with 'The Counterfeit Gypsies' has taken him to the National Folk Festival and the Illawarra Folk Festival as well as an eastern Australian tour in January 2004.

Justin has composed music for performance and screen. His work on "Shhhh", the 2001 animation by Adam Robb contributed to the film receiving an AFI in 2002 for best animation. Other recent work includes co-composition for " The Albatross" a Westside Circus production for the Melbourne Fringe Festival. He has continued composing for film and animation and writes regularly for student ensembles. Justin also plays the piano and piano accordian, making him the one of the most musical drummers around!
