Shanks Pony is different to most other bands.
Drawing from a number of stylistic influences, using a variety of different instruments and playing a wide range of material, Shanks Pony truly have a unique sound.
Sitting proudly within the folk/rock genre, Shanks Pony employs elements of blues, country, pop and basic old rock to build a range of sounds and feels. Think the Pogues and Weddings, Parties, Anything meet Steve Earle and Paul Kelly … then add a little of the Clash and the Dropkick Murphys and you’ll begin to understand where this band is coming from.
Wrangling sounds out of 6 and 12 string guitars, mandolin, harmonica, accordion, keyboards, dobro, bass, didgeridoo, drums and percussion, Shanks Pony shed a different light on many well known and loved songs … and breathe life into some lesser known music.
From the sensitive to the downright rowdy (the band’s particular forte), Shanks Pony plays a mix of contemporary and folk cover, traditional and original songs. With decidedly Australian and Irish overtones, Shanks Pony interprets a number of well known tunes to good effect. Imagine the "Bee Gees" played on the accordion, "The Cure" with a mandolin or a slew of traditional Irish tunes rocked up for the dancing masses.
Shanks Pony is new to the Perth music scene, but its members are not. In total, the members of Shanks Pony have in excess of 40 years of experience in a variety of bands, particularly in the Irish/folk scene in bands such as Not Enough Rope and The Big Squeeze.
