Marie Wilson
Marie Wilson is a jazz vocalist whose repertoire spans the 30s 40s and 50s.
Marie Wilson was born in Calcutta of Anglo-Indian parentage.
She first established herself as a jazz singer on the Indian Jazz scene before migrating to Australia in the early 1960's
For some years she worked the commercial cabaret and TV circuit in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide until the early 1980's when she decided to concentrate on jazz singing. She quickly established herself as a leading Jazz performer. Before long she had worked with some of the great names of Australian Jazz - Don Burrows, James Morrison, Julian Lee, George Golla, Kenny Powell, Chuck Yates, Kevin Hunt, Bob Barnard and Don Rader.
In July 1984 she completed a successful tour of Australia with Don Burrows and his Tribute to Benny Goodman. She has also made guest appearances on television shows for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and for Al Collins's (jazzbeaux) WNEW in New York. Marie has appeared Nationally at the following Jazz Festivals: Manly, Wangaratta, Bellingen and Thredbo: also Internationally at Wigan U.K.
Maries first LP I thought about You on the Larrikan Label, released in 1984, not only had an exceptional reception in Australia, but it also became the first ever Australian Jazz vocal Album to be released in the United States. It has since been released in Japan and the United Kingdom. This album has now been re-released on CD.
Her second album I Miss The Hungry Years was released in Australia in 1988 and has been received enthusiastically.
A new CD featuring Marie with Kevin Hunt, "The Magic of Hoagy Carmichael" was released in 2002. She is currently appearing with the Kevin Hunt band performing the "Music of George Gershwin."
During her career, Marie has received many accolades. They include:
• New South Wales Jazz Singer of the Year (1988)
• Australian Representative at the Jazz Yatra International Jazz Festival -India (1990)
• Mo Award as Australia's Jazz Vocalist (1995)
• Mo Award as Australia's Jazz Vocalist (1999) Mo Award as Australia's Jazz Vocalist (2002)
Marie appears regularly on the Sydney Jazz scene with pianist Kevin Hunt and they have just completed a recording for Jim McLeods Jazz Track at the ABC.
Marie appeared at the Wigan International Jazz Festival followed by a five week tour of London Jazz Clubs in 2001 and is returning by request during the summer season in 2003. Marie is looking forward to many more years in the Entertainment Industry and welcomes all opportunities to perform, both within Australia and the International Arena.
