Who is Chang? Changó is a guiding spirit in the Afro Cuban Santeria religion. When slaves were taken from Nigeria and West Africa to Cuba during the slave trade era, their music and religion went with them. The ancient African spirits were syncretised with Catholicism, and survived. Changó is the Lord of all drumming and dance and rules fire, thunder and lightning. He is the inspiration for our passionate vocals, fired up the rhythm section and blasting horns.
Our line up consists of female and male singers, keys, bass, trumpets, trombones, timbales, bongos and congas. All are very experienced musicians and several are clasically trained professionals. Our line up starts at a trio for a mellow smooth sound up a full 10 piece outfit for irresistably pulsating salsa beats.
Our set list covers Cuban son (think Buena Vista Social Club), classic salsa (think Fania All Stars from the 1970s), salsa dura (current NY salsa, an updated version of classic salsa), timba (contemporary Cuban fusion), merengue from Dominican republic, plena from Peurto Rico and cha cha cha (from Cuba). Our jazz set covers jazz versions of many of the above songs as well as long standing Latin jazz favourites by artists such as Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Poncho Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri etc.
¡Changó! is a regular performer at music festivals, salsa clubs, corporate events, harbour cruises. We work with event managers to ensure that we provide the best line up and the best set list to deliver music that will meet the objectives for your event.
