The Australian Youth Band Southern Stars is one of Australia's premier youth marching-concert bands. Our talented musicians range in age from 13 to 24 and come from all over Melbourne and Victoria. The band’s repertoire covers a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from exciting marching items featuring the famous Southern Stars Drumline to contemporary vocal numbers, and from popular show tunes to more serious symphonic works.

The Band was formed in 1978 as the Moomba Youth Band to lead the 25th Anniversary Procession of Melbourne’s annual Moomba Festival, and was later also known as the McDonald’s Melbourne Youth Band. Since its inception, the Band has journeyed extensively throughout Australia and overseas to perform its unique brand of colourful and dynamic music entertainment, playing regularly at popular metropolitan and regional festivals, major sporting events, marching band festivals, and corporate functions.

 

 

The Australian Youth Band has performed at venues as diverse as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Great Wall of China, Christchurch Cathedral, Broken Hill Showgrounds, Yokohama Arena, and Melbourne Concert Hall.
AYB features in many of Melbourne’s major events – performances over recent years have included the 2006 Commonwealth Games, FINA World Swimming Championships, Australia Day Parade, Davis Cup Tennis, Anzac Day March, NBL Basketball, Melbourne Cup Parade of Champions, Myer Christmas Parade, and Melbourne's Welcome Home Parade for Australia’s 2008 Olympic team.
Following a successful concert tour of New Zealand in September of 2007, AYB provided the Victorian contingent of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Orchestra, which entertained Olympic crowds throughout China. This was the band’s second Olympic experience, having contributed a large contingent for performances at Olympic ceremonies back in 2000 with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Band
The Band’s striking blue and orange Drizabone uniforms and Akubra hats provide a distinctly Australian image. Our wide repertoire and performance flexibility make the Australian Youth Band Southern Stars an exciting inclusion in all major events.
