Yalla is a traditional and upbeat Middle-Eastern Music and Dance group lead by Phil Carroll (ex ta'esh Fa'esh) on quartertone accordion, mizmar (arabic oboe) and ney (arabic flute).Phil has just returned from a 6 month performance and study tour of Turkey, Morocco and Egypt.
Other members of Yalla are: Andrew Kuhbnan and Nassim Kamil on percussion (tabul, darrabukas, reqs, dufs etc.)
Maria Sangiorgi dancer (dance-teacher, co-founder of the Snake Sisters) Phil Gunther on oud (lute) (member of Cantigas and La Kasbah,recently returned from a study tour of India and New York)
Ernie Gruner on violin (leader of Kiezmerilis, recently returned from a study tour of Eastern Europe and New York).
Yalla play traditional and inspired music of the Middle-East featuring the Egyptian Styles of Shaabi (folk), Baladi (urban folk) and Sharqi (classical). They also feature music of Persia, Turkey, North Africa and Tribal and Trance .
This music is all performed on acoustic, traditional, middle-eastern instruments-the only group of this kind in Australia. The group has already performed for Kate and Cherie Ceberano, at Aerostato , at the Annual Middle-Eastern Extravaganza, the Night Cat (Lounge Exotica Show), the Stage Bar'SSelebration Concert, a residency at the Builders Arm Hotel 'One Nation Under A Groove'series, Port Fair@, Folk- Festival 1998, Geelong Waterfront Festival '98, Geelong Pako Festival '98, Journeys Beyond Music Vie Arts Centre '99 and Active For Life Victorian Regional Tour '99.
