LUCAS MICHAILIDIS

Melbourne based musician and composer Lucas Michailidis brings to his latest CD release over 15 years of playing experience

Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Majoring in jazz guitar, performance and composition, Michailidis completed with distinction a Bachelor of Education in music at the University of Melbourne in 1991.

1992 marked the formation of progressive jazz group Hypno Clique-an original ensemble led by Michailidis which featured a number of Australia's finest jazz musicians- including pianist Andy Vance and saxophonist Lachlan Davidson.Past successes with this line-up consist of recordings for the ABC's 'Jazztrack' program, Radio 3MBS and performances at major Melbourne jazz venues- the Limerick Arms and Bennetts lane. In 1995 Hypno Clique were short listed to perform at India's premier festival- the'Yatra'.

In a professional development capacity, Michailidis devoted a two month period in 1996 participating in the National Guitar Summit Workshop. Connecticut, USA. Here he attended workshops conducted by eminent jazz guitarists: Jim Hall, Pat Martino, John Scofield and Howard Morgen.

A new line-up around this time culminated in the debut Michailidis release of 'Journey' on the Newmarket Label in 1997. This featured melodically driven music in a complete acousic setting. Appearances included the Continental, Chapel off Chapel as well a live to air broadcast at the Esplanade Hotel.

During 1998, Michailidis attended an intensive 6 month musical period in Los Angeles, studying with master composer/ musician Billy Childs and guitar luminary Ted Greene. It was here that much inspiration for his latest material was drawn.

" Having dealt with thousands of guitarists in the last 40 years, one learns to recognise talent and true love of music. After hearing the beautiful music of Lucas Michailidis, it is my strong wish that everyone could hear it."

Ted Greene LA

The release of his second CD 'The Offering' marks a significant departure from earlier work.
This recording consists of 13 original compositions performed in a solo acousic setting.

A prominent feature here is the extensive and unconventional use of guitar tunings. These
provide the music with a refreshing melodic approach that is free
of cliche'.

During the last six years his sought after guitar playing has been featured on several Australian CD titles. Artists have included Simon Lewis, Gavin Chatelier, Ian Chia and Cate Bailey.

Besides performing and promoting his original material, Lucas Michailidis works regularly as a freelance musician and is presently a sessional guitar tutor at the thriving musical environment of Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe.
