 DERRICK J.Derrick J. is known as "The Crooner" in his native Sri Lanka. He has been entertaining the for 20 years. His performances fulfill music lovers all over the Asia with his powerful vocal ability and showmanship. He is a legend in his own time.
Derrick J. began his musical career at the age of ten. He was a finalist in a talent quest sponsored by the commercial service of Radio Ceylon. Derrick grew into one of the hottest musical properties. He was well known in the island for the personal quality he brought into his music. His warm personality and enthusiasm captivated an audience of all ages. After one of his major concerts at the Colombo Hilton the "Sunday Observer" reviewed- "A packed audience watched spell- bound as Derrick J. proved beyond doubt that he was Sri Lanka's best vocalist." His voice has a complete and true pitch, a lyrical warmth and passionate strength. Derrick migrated to Australia in 1974 and in the same year his musical debut was on New Faces. He received Bert Newton's encouragement award - with a score of 82. This stemmed to many other performances on TV, promoting Derrick to eventually releasing and producing 7 albums. Derrick recorded his first album "LAST CHANCE FOR LOVE" along with a 28 piece orchestra with musicians of the highest caliber drawn from the ABC show band, channel 9 band and the Melbourne Symphony orchestra. Derrick's success to get a gold record for this album has been his ability to provide music of an international standard, namely his voice combined with great musicians from Melbourne.
