I have studied the Jester and its' international couterparts from childhood right through to university level in theatre and literature, with a bit of pyscholgy thrown in. My own interpretation has been in physical practice since 1994.
During the day I contract for Medieval Education. This requires me to teach Medieval History to year 8's at schools all around Victoria.
Over these years I have performed at many a varried venue and event. These include, but I am sure there are more, weddings, birthday parties (adult ones too), dance parties, school balls, corporate dinners and functions, parades and festivals.
The most common role of the jester is to be mobile in a roving act entertaining the passers by, be they passing or I passing them. This can be on either foot or in-line skate. The entertainments are spontanious, although I have a few original jokes and verses that I can fall back on. The jester is multi skill and has a portable range of acts to dip into. These are, as mentioned above, juggling, puppet, claranet, playing around with the english language (as it is so wont for), and if I am on the skates, a few skate tricks as well. These are always on the moment and of course appropriate to the target audience.
The roving works well wherever there is room be it confined such as a wedding reception or the openess of the outdoor dance party.
The showcase is naturally the one that occurs on a stage and is planned beforehand. I have never done the same show twice as each clients demands are different. Also my skills are forever developing and new skills being added. Past shows have included elements of what is written above with musical accompaniment, either from a live band (best) or 'piped' music (still good). However new elements can be utilized such as a UV show which involves me in all black (therefore unseen) or in jester costume manipulating UV active objects under black light. The stage show has been performed for corporates, a circus style show, fringe festival and dance parties just to name a few. For more information of what might work for you, or if you have something in mind just make contact.
Finally using my past research for the corporate audience I can give entertaining talks and discussions about the history, various roles, and relevance of the fool today along with stories and verses.
As I have said from the beginning of fooldom 'Don't be a fool.... hire one.'
Always look at life a bit differently because afterall a grape is only a wet raisin.
