Footsteps of a Nobody is a powerful one woman rock-musical from Donna Williams, author of the international bestseller, Nobody Nowhere; Autobiography of an Autistic Girl. Through characterisations, gestural signing, evocative spoken word and song it traces Donna’s pivotal experiences from a meaning deaf, meaning blind feral child to homelessness and life as a domestic prostitute and on to her ultimate fight to claim a place of equality among others.

It is performed by Donna Williams supported by the 5 piece band, The Aspinauts.  It combines, gestural signing, avant garde poetry, powerfully evocative characterisations, and theatrical musical surrealism.

The film, Nobody Nowhere, is currently in preproduction with award winning Australian director Garth Davis attached to direct.

It made its debut at The Carlton Courthouse in July 2009.  The musical runs for an hour and we welcome inquiries from theaters and the corporate sector interested in putting the show on at their venue.

Background...

Footsteps of a Nobody is a lyrical, musical, and allegorical journey of the pivotal events of my first 25 years derived from my autobiography, Nobody Nowhere; Autobiography of An Autistic Girl.

When Nobody Nowhere hit the bookshelves in 1991 it was the first mainstream book published in the English language written by a person with autism (Temple Grandin had a book in the academic realm 5 years earlier). It spent over 10 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, was translated into over 20 languages and read by millions of people worldwide.

Nobody Nowhere changed the way autism was viewed and diagnosed and a tidal wave of autie-biographies flowed into the market place. By and large they were middle class stories of children who had been through various expensive therapies, supported by deeply loving, fairly functional families. The message seemed to be that only love and intensive (generally costly) therapy could help an autistic child.

I was interviewed by journalists around the world. They asked what had helped me. There was no place for discussion of tough love, survival or the school of hard knocks. It seemed impossible to show them the circumstances which make or break a soul, which push us to the edge, sometimes beyond, which glue us back together or gather us from the dust that remains. Footsteps of a Nobody is about those circumstances, good, bad, ugly and magical, for which I have not the slightest regret.

The film rights to Nobody Nowhere were bought by a Hollywood producer, Beverly Nero and the film based on the book is currently in pre-production with award winning Australian director, Garth Davis signed to direct it.
