THE MOVING PICTURE SHOW

THE MOVING PICTURE SHOW

“The Moving Picture Show”, recreates the 1920’s silent film theatrical experience. Original silent films accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra playing original sheet music that was used to accompany these magnificent films!

Oatley, Sydney, NSW, Australia
Our unique show (one of only very few in the world) is an authentic look at the Golden age of Cinema spanning the silent era. Each show is a carefully constructed performance combining rarely seen cinematic classics with a live (up to) 10 piece orchestra, dressed in formal 20’s gear, a music director that looks like she would be far more at home in the 20’s with her flapper costume and full regalia and an MC in tails who guides the journey and provides sound effects live as the show plays on.
Add newsreels, slide shows, sing-alongs and a whole lot more for a value packed show to delight your audience and keep them coming back for more.
We follow the original silent movie format starting with “God save the King” (George V was the king of the era), followed by a  Newsreel of the era - many Australian.   Ads in the intermission - all from the era, some purely Australian, all accompanied by a player piano (recording) playing Australian piano rolls. Sing-a-long – using copies of original glass slides used for this purpose in early shows at the beginning of the 20th Century and a great leader to lead the singing. Look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCX2k57abNE to see one example.
Slapstick (comedy) film + a serious film or whatever is your choice. The show includes Australian and other popular films of the silent era, all accompanied by a live orchestra of professional musicians using music originally played for the silent films in Sydney and now housed in the National Library. Look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv_LCKPJoDs to see an example of a show, or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDqDBco-dPA to see a series of stills of some of our performances accompanied by the orchestra performing for Laurel and Hardys “The Two Tars”.
Some of the films we have shown include Kid Stakes “Pop” Ordell Son of the Sheik Rudolph Valentino Black Pirate Douglas Fairbanks (a silent technicolour film) The Mark of Zorro Douglas Fairbanks Nosferatu Phantom of the Opera Lon Chaney The Flapper Olive Thomas The Rink Charlie Chaplin The Floorwalker Charlie Chaplin The Fireman Charlie Chaplin The Vagabond Charlie Chaplin Easy Street Charlie Chaplin The Boat Buster Keaton The High Sign Buster Keaton One Week Buster Keaton The Goat Buster Keaton Paleface Buster Keaton Cops Buster Keaton Steamboat Bill Jr Buster Keaton The Blacksmith Buster Keaton Get Out and Get Under Harold Lloyd Never Weaken Harold Lloyd Speedy Harold Lloyd Hot Water Harold Lloyd The Dogs of War Our Gang The Two Tars Laurel and Hardy Big Business Laurel and Hardy The Iron Mule Barney Oldfield’s Race for Life Keystone Kops shorts Mighty Like a Moose Charley Chase Fiddlesticks Harry Langton His New Mama Harry Langdon.  Ask about any others you may wish to see.
We are certainly unique in Australia, and work closely with the National Film and Sound Archives (NFSA) to present as much original Australian material as possible in the way it was shown in the 1920’s. With considerable interest in our show from organisations and theatres that are concerned with presenting our heritage, the Moving Picture Show is an experience not to be missed. We have performed in many venues in and around Sydney including the prestigious Chauvel Cinema to glowing audience reviews.
