Charlotte Dawson left her native New Zealand at the age of 16 beginning an international modelling career that lasted a decade. After leaving the catwalks of Europe and the Ford Model Agency in New York she relocated to Australia where she worked as a model agent for top Australian agencies Cameron’s and Priscilla’s.
In the early 1990’s she landed a job as a researcher at Channel Nine in Sydney working on programs such as ‘Money’ and ‘Looking Good’ where she then moved into on-camera presenting and reporting. She thereafter became the fashion and social reporter for the network’s ‘Today’ program taking her on national and international assignments. Publications such as ‘Vogue’, ‘Elle’, ‘She’, ‘Cleo’ and ‘Mode’ magazines tracked her progress, featuring articles and often sought her opinion on fashion issues. She also appeared on the other Nine shows such as ‘The Footy Show’, ‘Wide World of Sports’, ‘Burkes Backyard’, ‘Simply the Best’ and ‘Nightline’. AT this time she was also in demand as a host and MC for many industry events.
In 1997 she began her career in publishing becoming the Beauty and Fashion Director for ‘Woman’s Day’. She then moved on to become a regular panellist on Foxtel’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and entertainment reporter for Network Ten’s ‘E! News’ and then took up residence as Style Editor for ‘New Idea’ magazine. She then presented a weekly fashion segment on Ten’s ‘Good Morning Australia’ and penned a weekly column for NW magazine called ‘Dawson’s Week’.
In 2000 Charlotte completed her theatrical debut starring in the Kevin Jacobsen production ‘Girls Night Out’ and then starred in a season of the highly respected ‘Vagina Monologues’. She also was a patron of Kids With Aids and was an ambassador for the NSW Cancer Council.
2002 saw Charlotte return to New Zealand to host a panel and advice show ‘How’s Life?’ for TVNZ and as a result of that started a weekly advice column in New Zealand ‘Woman’s Day’ magazine. She then made a documentary about the search for her birth mother, which also screened on Foxtel’s ‘W’ channel. Charlotte also took part as a contestant in ‘Celebrity Treasure Island’. During this time Charlotte published a biography with Penguin Books ‘Charlotte’s Secrets – The advice I wish I had Taken’, a candid and humorous look at her life and experiences in the fashion and media industries.
In 2004 Charlotte became the host and producer of New Zealand ‘Getaway’ and wrote a weekly travel column in the ‘Sunday Star Times’. After three years of travelling Charlotte has recently returned to Sydney and is currently appearing as a judge on Fox 8’s ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’. She is currently living between Sydney and Auckland and about to complete another series ‘Charlottes List’s’ for Prime Time television.
She then began her media career as a television fashion journalist for the Nine Network, reporting for the ‘Today Show’ for five years. During this time she filed segments in Australia and overseas covering mainly fashion and beauty stories. She also made appearances on ‘Wide World of Sports’, ‘A Current Affair’, ‘Looking Good’ and ‘Nightline’ .She was also appointed Fashion and Beauty Director of ‘Woman’s Day’ Magazine. After moving over to take Style Director Position at ‘New Idea’ she was approached to do fashion/style/celebrity reporting for Network Tens ‘E News’. In the final series of ‘E News’ she hosted her own celebrity segment called ‘What’s Going On?’. During this time she worked on Foxtel and Network Tens ‘Beauty and the Beast’ as a regular panellist and had a weekly fashion segment on ‘Good Morning Australia’.
Charlotte became a regular on the speaking circuit, hosting many fashion and beauty industry events. She continued to work as a freelance fashion and beauty journalist. Considering her background and experience, Charlotte was often featured in Australia’s top fashion publications for fashion/beauty/social comment or features. She was fashion designer Peter Morrissey’s muse and appeared in his winter 2000 advertising campaign. She also performed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
As of the end of 2000 Charlotte launched into unfamiliar territory as a theatre actor appearing in Kevin Jacobsen’s ‘Girls Night Out’ at Sydney’s Star City Casino and then was cast in the hugely popular ‘Vagina Monologues’ to rave reviews.
Charlotte relocated to Auckland, New Zealand in 2002 to host ‘How’s Life?’, a panel programme based on ‘Beauty and The Beast’, she also had a weekly advice column in New Zealand’s ‘Woman’s Day’ magazine and co-produced a documentary ‘Charlottes Web’ about the search for her birth mother. She then travelled the globe for three years as host and producer of the New Zealand version of ‘Getaway’. She also completed her autobiography ‘Charlottes Secrets – The advice I wish I had taken’ in 2004.
Charlotte returned to Sydney in 2007 to become the judge on Foxtel’s ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ and is currently the face of Fox 8. She continues to contribute as a freelance writer and commentator across all forms of media in Australia
