Profile:
George Halkias is a well respected community figure who has supported some of the most vulnerable members in our community. Over the past 15 years he has coordinated innovative services and programs that have changed the lives of many Australians.
Following completion of a psychology degree, George has worked extensively in the government and community sectors on various ground breaking projects. He has used his skills to find unique ways to involve the corporate world in his projects, such as the recent 2008 Homeless World Cup in
Melbourne .
Some of George's career achievements include:
1998 Managed the Victims Referral and Assistance Service, Department of Justice Victoria: A highly respected statewide service that supported victims of violent crime. This incorporated a call centre/helpline in which up to 20 professional staff responded immediately to victims needing accurate information and emotional support.
2004 Began the street soccer program in Fitzroy with volunteers and staff from the Big Issue
2005 Coordinated the first Australian team to participate in the Homeless World Cup,
Edinburgh, , . Included sourcing corporate sponsorship for the program and event.
2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Coached and Coordinated the Australian team at the South African, Danish, Melbourne and Italian Homeless World Cups
After being instrumental in formulating the winning bid to bring the 2008 Homeless World Cup to
Melbourne George was the public face of the games. He played a vital role in planning, marketing and staging this amazing international community and sporting event.
