Lewis is regarded by many as the "Greatest Olympian Ever". In 1984, "King Carl" matched Jesse Owens' feat of winning gold medals in the 100 and 200 metre dashes, the 4 x 100 metre relay and the long jump.

Brief History

  • In 1988, he repeated his winning performances in the 100 metres and long jump while taking a silver in the 200 metres.
  • In 1992, Lewis again took the long jump, and anchored a world record-breaking 4 x 100 metre relay team to win his seventh and eighth golds.
  • In 1996, Lewis won his fourth consecutive gold medal in the long jump, which made him just the second Olympian ever (along with Al Oerter) to win the same event in four straight Olympic Games.

·         His nine Olympic gold medals officially tie him with Mark Spitz for first place on the all time U.S. list.
