To commemorate the cuisine of Istanbul – named the European Capital of Culture 2010 - Chef Somer Sivrioglu of Efendy Restaurant has joined with Turkish cookbook author Deniz Gokturk to host a special, one-off celebration dinner. Held at Turkish restaurant Efendy on Thursday, August 19, the evening promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the flavours of contemporary Turkey. Bringing together Chef Sivrioglu’s authentic Turkish fare with the decadent breads and pastries from Gokturk’s cookbook, Turkish Bakery Delight, the menu has been designed to showcase the best of Istanbul’s vibrant cuisine. The culinary journey will begin with a rich collection of Mezes – like Turkish tapas or small plates – prepared by Chef Sivrioglu and his all-Turkish Efendy kitchen team. The two cold meze represent those served in the meyhanes, or gourmet pubs, of Beyoglu in Istanbul, while the two hot meze reflect the street hawker style of seafood dishes from Istanbul’s buzzing fish markets. The trio of lamb dishes that follow have been drawn from ancient Istanbul palace recipes and demonstrate both the authentic flavours of the region and Chef Sivrioglu’s skill in recreating them. A testament to his culinary flair, Chef Sivrioglu is the only Turkish Chef involved in the Sydney International Food Festival, bringing out globally recognised Turkish Chef Musa Da?deviren. Finishing the dinner on a high note, Gokturk has selected a trio of decadent desserts from her cookbook to ensure guests have a sweet send off. Complementing the superb cuisine, a variety of Turkish entertainment is on offer. Deniz, an accomplished Turkish psychic and professional coffee cup reader for over 15 years, will be on hand to impart his foresight on diner’s futures. Soft Turkish dinner music from artists Alin and Melike will be played live, the perfect backdrop to an evening of fine food and conversation. The warm, hospitable Turkish service that Efendy Restaurant is renowned for will cap what is sure to be an unforgettable evening in celebration of the European Capital of Culture for 2010, Istanbul. The dinner kicks off at 7.00pm and is $55 per person (not including alcohol). A selection of wine, Raki (traditional Turkish spirit), beer and Turkish cocktails will be available on the evening.
