Solving corporation’s biggest problem
20 years of research by the staff here at Host A Murder has revealed that the major problem confronting almost all companies today is a break down in communication between upper management and middle management and between different departments. Host A Murder can solve this problem by removing people from their usual titles, roles and positions and get them to relate to one another in a human fun filled way for 2.5 hours. This brings about the total cultural change for the company as the testimonials we have received confirms (see testimonials below or visit our website
www.hostamurder.com.au). Almost any business magazine and certainly every corporate training programme will tell you the same thing these days, that the key to better business is better communication.
There are many ways to achieve better flows of communication, but a great way to start is to get people relating to each other as more than just their job descriptions.
And this is where Host a Murder comes in. Not only are participants in for a night of hilarious fun, there is probably no better icebreaker than an evening where players have the opportunity to improve their listening skills, practice public speaking and work as a team to solve a murder mystery!
The basic idea is that a group of people are invited to a venue for a marvellous three-course meal. Upon arrival, each guest is allocated a character. Shortly after, the group is presented with the news that one unfortunate character has been murdered! The circumstances are certainly suspicious and it is revealed that the murderer hides among the remaining characters. As the meal progresses, details and secret clues are revealed about each guest and their possible motives for murder. Importantly, no alcohol is served during the game as experience has proven that this causes participants to easily lose the thread of the plot and spoil the game.
The concept of using Host a Murder as a corporate training tool was the brainchild of Australian businessman Peter Eedy. Trained as a communication consultant and being a restaurant owner, Peter began running Host a Murder dinner parties and group bookings some 20 years ago. Observing the enthusiasm with which participants dived into the plot and the characters, Peter soon realised that the game provided a perfect vehicle for business people to step outside their usual identities and become more aware of relating to the people with whom they work.
Peter began to note his observations in press releases and advertising. It wasn’t long before an adventurous head of staff training at Telstra – Leonie Cribban – was on the phone. She wanted to use Host a Murder as the kick-off for an 11-day Train the Trainer course.
The course was a great success and afterwards Leonie called Peter to thank him for the best conference introduction she had ever experienced. “The Host a Murder evening that we conducted at the beginning of the course established a flow of communication and an openness that set the stage for an excellent conference. It should also be said that it saved us a lot of money!”
Suddenly Peter was receiving enquiries from some of Australia’s largest corporations, requesting Host a Murder parties as part of their own conference timetable. To date, Peter has ‘hosted murders’ for leading Australian and international corporations including Telstra, The Reserve Bank, Ramada Renaissance executive staff, The Treasury, Macquarie Bank, Westpac regional managers, The Rydges Hotel, Coopers & Lybrand, Greater Union and Toshiba, to name a few. Peter has conducted Host a Murder dinners for the Anthony Robbins Sales Team and would love to start opening conferences and workshops for investment seminars.
Host a Murder continues to draw a consistent market in and around Sydney for birthday parties, social club functions, girls’ nights and fund-raisers. Furthermore, the value of such events in business training and team building is being increasingly realised.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the game ‘How to Host a Murder’ and Peter expects that he and his team will have their busiest year ever.
