"With over 130 albums to his credit, Alex Pertout is today undeniably one of Australia's most recorded musicians, and if you consider his work in soundtracks, commercials, live performances, television and theatre orchestras, education and production, he may also prove to be one of Australia's most diverse...."
Australian Musician  Spring 1998 issue.

Alex Pertout was born in Santiago, Chile, lived in Italy and settled in Australia in 1972. His parents provided a creative backdrop for his musical growth. His Chilean mother and Slovenian father (surname of French origin) were ardent lovers of classical music, and in particular, opera. As both of his parents loved to sing, music was heard day and night. The beautiful clear tones of his mother's soprano voice are a feature of Recuerdos de los Andes a track on his self-titled cd. At the age of fifteen he embarked upon studies in Latin American percussion which led to an academic musical path. During his college education, he also took up jazz vibes, orchestral percussion and piano. Alex graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1983 with distinctions in performance and composition. Alex's reputation, not only as an outstanding percussionist but also as an excellent performer and improviser, grew rapidly, and he has now become one of Australia's leading percussionists and a specialist in the field of Latin American percussion - a style which he has been researching for over twenty years.

Diversity is certainly one of his major characteristics, and so far his career has attained him credits on over 130 albums, in numerous soundtracks, in a variety of commercials, in television and theatre orchestras, as a musical director, as a record producer and engineer, and in countless live performances. He has also established himself as a respected educator.

Some of the artists he has recorded and performed with include: Australian Art Orchestra, Little River Band, John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite, Japanese fusion band Casiopea, Brian Brown, French artist CharlElie Couture, Tina Arena, Jane Rutter, Danii Minogue, Merril Bainbridge, Brazilian artist Badi Assad, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Things of Stone and Wood, Hunters & Collectors, Tommy Emmanuel, Paul Grabowsky, Earl Brown, Tony Gould, Debra Byrne, Olivia Newton-John, The Lovers, Grace Knight, Lisa McCune, Malaysian pop band Wings, Goanna, Redgum, Australian Philharmonic Orchestra, James Morrison, Graeme Lyall, Graham Goble, The Seekers, Archie Roach, Mark Gillespie, Venice Beach, Ted Egan, Brian Cadd, Kids in the Kitchen, James Reyne, The Black Sorrows w/Joe Camilleri, Shane Howard, Stephen Cummings, Joe Chindamo, Southern Sons, Ross Wilson, Richard Pleasance, Cezary Skubiszewski, John Foreman, Judy Conelli, Kate Ceberano & Her Septet, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Andrew Pendlebury, Coco's Lunch, Ross Ryan, Slava Grigoryan, Pseudo Echo, Pipoca, Chantoozies, Indecent Obsession, Colleen Hewet, Steve Grace, Greg Champion, Mondo Rock, Marc Hunter, Vince Jones, Bob Sedergreen, The Slow Club, Bruce Rowlands, John McAuslan, World Rhythm Band, Lisa Young, Seona McDowel, David Hirschfelder, Colin Buchanan, Linda George, Kavisha Mazzella, The Purple Dentists, Linda

His percussive work is to be heard also on the soundtracks of many films. As a result of his expertise in many areas of percussion, he has been a member of numerous television orchestras, and has participated in concerts and tours of a wide musical range. He embarked on yet another facet of his already colourful artistic career releasing his self-titled debut compact disc as a composer and multi-instrumentalist, and a book for instrumentalists and vocalists, designed to develop sight reading and rhythmical skills . As a composer and producer he has written music for several short films and commercials, has been appointed musical director-composer for productions, and has original compositions on compact disc releases.
