The GCB Big Band was formed in August 1999, and is part of the Geelong Concert Band Inc. Originally formed in order to participate in the Geelong Eisteddfod of 1999, the Big Band continued on and has since completed its first interstate tour and various performances around the Geelong and Melbourne region.
The sixteen members of the band, are Geelong based and also part of the Geelong Concert Band community. Rehearsing most weekends, the GCB Big Band creates a forum for more challenging music for interested and able musicians. As it is not a school-based ensemble, it depends solely upon the dedication and commitment of its players.
The Big Band specialises in swing, jazz and blues repertoire from traditional to modern styles at the highest standard. The band's focus is on providing entertainment to all audiences, developing skills in improvisation and performance at a professional level.
The GCB Big Band has performed at local rotary concerts, fundraisers, and special events around Geelong. The band also took first place in the Jazz and Swing Band-Open Section of the Geelong Eisteddfod in 1999 and 2000.
The Big Band toured the Gold Coast in April, 2000, and performed at various tourist attractions including, Movieworld, Dreamworld, Seaworld as well as performances at Broadbeach Mall. The two-week tour showcased the band's extensive repertoire and brought the players closer together as an ensemble.
