Built initially on a love of Jamaican dub rhythms & techniques, since 1995 Melbourne based High Pass Filter have been making & releasing music that defies categorisation. Fusing live instruments with the cut & paste stylings of dance technology to build what could be loosely described as a dub-electronic-rock hybrid, High Pass Filter have concocted a sound that is not only unique to Australia, but one that can only be considered innovative & exciting on a world scale.
An amalgam of dub bass, beats’n’brass, hip-hop turntables, krautrock synths, loops and guitar, the five parts of High Pass Filter are:
Lawrence de Zoete - Drums
Ben Green - Vocals, Turntables, Loops
Anthony Paine - Bass, Toys
Kelly Ryall - Guitar, Keyboards
James Wilkinson - Trombone, Toys
Evolving over three CD releases (see over), as well as a heap of live shows in venues ranging from cruise ships to outdoor festivals (Big Day Out, Livid), & with acts as diverse as Lee Scratch Perry, The Boredoms, The Beastie Boys, Fugazi, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, DJ Spooky, African Headcharge, Dub War, Fun-da-mental, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea & Audio Active, High Pass Filter are currently readying themselves for the next phase......
Armed with a wealth of new material developed through some intense periods of rehearsal & a handful of low key live shows in late 2000 & early 2001, High Pass Filter recently entered ABC Studios in Melbourne & laid down a bunch of tracks that will comprise their debut album, due for release later in the year. April ‘01 saw the band team up with electro-freakers Ju Ju Space Jazz for some big shows in Sydney (Newtown RSL) & Melbourne (The Corner) & short term plans include another Sydney jaunt, plus shows in Brisbane, & possibly Japan & (a return visit) to New Zealand.
