Over the years both the 8-piece and big band have been critically acclaimed for their musicianship and polished professionalism. In 1992 Daryl McKenzie took over the role of Musical Director of the Nine Network’s “Hey Hey It’s Saturday” which began a long lasting musical collaboration with Wilbur Wilde. For the next 8 years the Hey Hey Band performed with international artists such as Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Barry Manilow, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, Roger Daltry and Randy Crawford; as well as Australian artists such as Tina Arena, Human Nature, Tommy Emmanuel, James Morrison, Rhonda Burchmore, Debra Byrne and Marcia Hines to name a few. Not many bands can boast performances with Samuel L Jackson, Shane Warne and Grant Hackett! The band toured internationally to the USA and Malaysia and also performed to large concert audiences in Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Sydney, Gold Coast and Ayers Rock. Since the end of the television stint, the Daryl McKenzie Band has continued to perform at corporate functions and major events including the Melbourne Grand Prix, the VAC Federation Australia Day concert, the Sounds of Christmas for the Salvation Army, the reopening of the Adelaide Casino, and was featured at the North Queensland Jazz Festival in Mackay and Jazz in the Vineyards at the Morning star Estate. The big band has also featured on the soundtracks of several movies such as “The Wogboy”, “After the Rain” and AFI award winning scores “Bootmen” and “La Spagnola”.

Both the 8-piece and big bands perform a wide range of material to suit all tastes. The extensive repertoire ranges from the classic songs of the big band era through the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s disco hits and right up to the latest in great current dance music. The band features some of Australia’s finest singers and instrumentalists:

Angela Librandi (Vocals) is a very much in demand singer for covers and funk bands and recording sessions for albums and commercials. Her television credits include Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush, IMT, Good Morning Australia and of course, Hey Hey it’s Saturday. Angela also regularly tours with Jimmy Barnes, Brian Cadd and Patrick McMahon.

Angie Hilton (Vocals) is a highly talented singer and presenter. Her television credits include Good Sports, Big Brother, Full Frontal, Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, GMA and Hey Hey. Angie is a member of the pop group Sirens and did all the singing work on the recording of “I’m So Excited” with Sarah Marie.

Daryl McKenzie (Musical Director, Trombone) has arranged for and played with the artists listed previously. Daryl was Assistant Musical Director of the Bert Newton Show and Musical Director of Hey Hey It’s Saturday. He has arranged for most major Television variety shows. Composition credits include Plucka’s Place, Best and Worst of Red Faces, Logie Awards and the movie “Love and Other Catastrophes”. Daryl has orchestrated and conducted several film scores including the Truman Show (Golden Globe winner), Bootmen and La Spagnola (AFI award winners), and the Wogboy.

Lachlan Davidson (Saxophone) has played in the band since the early days. He is also a much in demand session player and performer with other bands such as the Australian Showband, the Australian Art Orchestra, and his own band Unlokked (new CD out now. Lachlan has performed with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder and has appeared as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

John Barrett (Saxophone) has been arguably the busiest session player in town for the last 3 decades. His credits include the Don Lane show, New Faces, the Bert Newton show and Tonight Live with Steve Vizard. John has just finished the Melbourne season of “Singing in the Rain” and has many other shows to his credit. He is an extraordinary soloist and can double on just about any instrument that can be blown!

David Newdick (Lead Trumpet) has gained a reputation as one of the finest and most exciting lead Trumpet players in Australia. He is also a great soloist having fronted his own small groups. David was with the Hey Hey Band for many years and is very busy in the theatre having just completed “Singing in the Rain”. He has also toured South East Asia with the production of “Cats”. David was seen recently performing with James Morrison’s new band “Scream Machine”.

Craig Newman (Bass) and Darryn Farrugia (Drums) have both been with the Daryl McKenzie band since the early days and were both long time members of the Hey Hey band. They therefore form a tight and energetic rhythm section anchor for the band. Both have extensive television and recording credits. Craig has toured the UK and South East Asia with Kylie Minogue, the Seekers and as a Roland clinician. He recently performed in Paris with John Farnham. Craig has been a long-time member of Wilbur Wilde’s Blowout and Darryn has been a member of Tommy Emmanuel’s band, Wilbur Wilde’s Blowout and works as a clinician for Premier.
Wilbur Wilde (Sax and Vocals) often appears with the band as an “add-on” extra. His availability and fee should be obtained from his agent via us.

Wilbur was of course a star of Hey Hey It’s Saturday, a member of Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, Ol’ 55 and the Old Skydaddys. He is currently a presenter on radio GOLD104.
