Oi Vey! Such a fantastic noise! This joyous celebration of Yiddish and Klezmer song is not to be missed - even if it is Saturday! Dynamic 5-piece band, Spiel Azoi transform the traditional with toe-tapping, hip swinging original arrangmenets and contemporary interpretations that finds the celebration button in all cultures. Raw energy, great musical talent and a hell of a lot of Chutzpah!
 
Spiel Azoi perform at well known festivals such as St Kilda Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and Apollo Bay Music Festival. In October 2003 the band toured regional Victoria with the support of Arts Victoria and they appeared in the Famous Spiegeltent for the Melbourne International Festival 2003.
 
The Musicians

Sarah Mandie : Vocals (Zaftik/Juicy)

Gutsy folk and Cabaret performer.

Former member of popular acapella group “Nude Rain”. Creator of “Seeking the Songs of My Ancestors”, an original narrative journey into Yiddish song.

Martin Mackeress : Clarinet (Shtiferish/Mischievous)

Charismatic and talented musician and performer. Studied classical clarinet and Klezmer on a Fulbright scholarship in New York. Martin is also a New music and pop composer.

Dave Evans: Accordion (Shturemdik/Stormy)

Entertainer extraordinaire and member of the widely renowned “Band Who Knew Too Much” He is an experienced cabaret and jazz accompanist and touring musician.  

Mark Shepherd : Double Bass (Gevirzik/Spicy)

Mark is a creative and delightful musician with artistic contributions to folk and original contemporary jazz ensembles,  “Adana”, “Ish Ish” and “Archeoptryx”.

Ben Hendry : Drums (Energish/Energetic)

Versatile and engaging drummer and performer Ben also plays Jazz, all folk styles and composes his own music.

Performances

Spiel Azoi have brought Klezmer to life in the Melbourne music scene appearing regularly at Bar Open, The Boite World Music café and other venues The Continental, the Esplanade hotel, Punters Club and the Melbourne Folk club. Spiel Azoi were featured in the Chapel St. and St Kilda festival, Queenscliff Music festival 2002 and  Port fairy folk Festival and Apollo Bay Music Festival and Kosher Culture on Carlisle in 2003.

Spiel azoi are an exciting and energetic band to have at your simcha. Playing horas, Dancey Klezmer tunes and a mix of jazz, latin and lounge music. (Repertoire list to come)
