The son of former Demon star Alan Johnson, Chris built on his 2005 debut season by appearing eight times at senior level last year. The Demons used their third round pick (number 36 overall) in the National AFL draft to secure Chris under the father-son rule in 2003.
As a junior Chris toured Ireland in 2004 with the AIS-AFL Academy, and has also represented WA at the National AFL Championships at both under-16 and under-18 levels.
At 188cm, Chris has gained several kilos after a few AFL pre seasons and has the versatility to play down back, on the wing or half forward. Chris exhibits great endurance and evasive skills. He has worked hard on developing his body and strength and shows considerable promise and the ability to continue to develop.
After a 2007 season which saw him in and out of the senior Melbourne side, he regularly was amongst Sandringham’s best players every game. With his versatility, and ability to apply more defensive pressure Chris looked to have a big season in 2008. After breaking into the senior side in Round 12 he played a number of consecutive games until he incurred a groin injury in Round 20 which forced him out of the senior line up.
Chris was selected by Carlton in the 2008 Pre-Season Draft, where he will slot into the senior line up and provide Carlton with another consistent versatile option.
