Dezakrate formed in early '95 as a garage band. These were guys dreaming of doing what they love, music. After jamming on telephone books, the start of the dream came true and real instruments were bought. Dezakrate consisted of Simon Sacco (guitar) and Darren Bennetts (drums). Soon after Dean Engert (guitar) joined the ranks. They then began to jam on songs from their favourite bands, Metallica, Alice In Chains, and Pantera until vocalist Ash Armstead joined and soon after, Andrew Lean on bass. Work on original material then commenced, steadily.
More cover songs were established until the first gig in April '96 to a 1000 strong audience at a local school. At this point the band was known as Carnage, but due to another band using a similar name, a change was made to Dezakrate to amongst other things signify the beginning of this new band and a new, original sound.
On August of that year a self organised gig was played to 140 people in a backyard in Tullamarine. Later that year the decision was made to record 4 original songs on 8 track. After much effort the debut self titled demo was released. This has received good reviews, and in particular a review in Loudmouth Magazine, #2.
In December another gig was played at an alternative festival (called Zonk) and they were well received. The beginning of '97 brought about the opportunity to play at a local club, Mr Pockets, that usually features rock and alternative bands. Dezakrate brought a new style of music to the club and it was well received by about 100 people. The management asked the band back and several shows have followed to date with great audience response.
Radio stations have also caught on to Dezakrate with EAR FM featuring a Dezakrate night with the band programming and being interviewed. 3CR, Melton FM and various other independent stations are also playing Dark Nite and others songs from the demo.
Dezakrate's sound has been described like Metallica when they first came out, no one new what it was. The sound is a concoction of Machine Head, Sepultura, Metallica and Alice In Chains but also has an original groove and feel to it's sound. "Ash Armstead's vocals are clean and driven (a bit reminiscent of Mr Hetfield himself at times)"[loudmouth review] The above bands are just a small example of Dezakrate's variety of influences and explains the diversity and originality of this sound and the original direction is building more with a range of new original tracks.
The band aims to promote themselves to the extreme. Dezakrate love playing live and will play anywhere that will have them. The band also aims to generate money for an Ep or even an album in early '98. If support isn't forthcoming from the industry, an independent release will occur. Dezakrate is a band that will do as it wants and forge on. They are dead serious about showing their music to the community and despite put downs will continue to do what they love, DEZAKRATE!!
